I spent the past week with Nahvalur Pens and Notebook Systems!

Sunday Reading for October 2, 2022

October 2, 2022
  1. Gravitas Sentry Big Dropper & Delrin Fountain Pens (via Pencilcase Blog). I had the pleasure of meeting Ben Walsh and handling some of the Delrin and “Big Dropper” models at this year’s D.C. Pen Show. I was impressed with all of them and need to bring some in for review soon.

  2. 2022 Dallas Pen Show Recap (via Pen Addict - Kimberly). I’m happy to see a good overall review of the Dallas Pen Show, and heard great things from many attendees. There needs to be a strong lineup of smaller, regional shows.

  3. Newsflash: Cosmo Air Light (via Well-Appointed Desk). Daryl at Musubi broke the news last week that Cosmo Air Light paper was being discontinued.

  4. Kokuyo Auxiliary Hardcover Notebook (via Blake’s Broadcast). Kokuyo makes excellent hardcover notebooks, and these bound ledger-style notebooks look very interesting.

  5. Semikolon Grand Voyage Notebook (via Fountain Pen Blog). I’ve always loved the look of Semikolon notebooks but in the past the paper has not worked well for me. I’m excited to see that the paper in this particular notebook got good reviews.

  6. Diamine Monboddo’s Hat on Midori MD (via Inkredible Colors). Monboddo’s Hat is often recommended as a substitute for the coveted Lamy Dark Lilac, FWIW.

  7. Do You Ever Regret Getting a Custom Nib Grind (via Chicana Writes). Early on, absolutely, but I’ve since accepted that sometimes I just made a bad choice and have passed those pens along to others. These days I try to keep a wider range of custom and standard grinds on hand since I know my preferences tend to change and I do different kinds of writing.

  8. Endless Stationery Recorder Notebook Deep Ocean with 80 gsm Regalia Paper (via Rants of the Archer). Endless has moved away from Tomoe River 68gsm (presumably for supply reasons) and has substituted their own in-house paper.

  9. Lamy Charged Green (via Dapprman). Reviews of this ink are few and far between, especially given how prevalent it was (as in, it was a difficult color to sell when Lamy issued it). Those who like bright green inks for annotation and possibly highlighting may want to consider it?

  10. Troublemaker Grand River Sunset (via Mountain of Ink). I’ve recently discovered Troublemaker Inks, another brand from the Philippines that specializes in shading/sheening/shimmer/you-name-the-special-property.

In Case You Missed It…

This week on the blog, I reviewed the Nahvalur (formerly Narwhal) “Original Plus” Fountain Pen, which is Nahvalur’s revamped version of their inaugural pen from 2019, featuring a vacuum-filler fountain pen and redesigned materials. I also published Part III of my ongoing series on Notebook Systems, this week focusing on Traveler’s Notebook and what I refer to as “modular” notebook systems.

New This Week in the Curated Shop

This week saw the arrival of the TWSBI ECO in Cerulean Blue, an eye-popping deep-sea blue that I would actually describe as a more vibrant turquoise. We also restocked on the glow-in-the-dark TWSBI ECO Glow fountain pen, and launched Anderillium Inks as a new brand, so that you now have additional ink choices to pair with fountain pens purchased from our shop. Finally, the Mark’style Tous les Jours Needle-tip ballpoint is back in stock, in nearly a dozen different colors. These needle-tip ballpoints are a personal favorite. The refills last forever and will soon be sold separately (they use an Ohto cartridge).

Many Thanks for Your Shop Support, and Please Consider T.G.S. Patreon!

We’ve been surprised at the level of enthusiasm and support for our curated retail strategy over the past couple of months, and after careful consideration are beginning to build out our inventory with more brands and product categories. I love managing this aspect of T.G.S., as it offers me the opportunity to directly put great stationery - including brands I feel are underappreciated and underemphasized - into your hands. For those who want to support T.G.S. without necessarily adding to their accumulation, the Patreon Program offers two options for tiers of support: $3 and $5, and plan on making monthly meetups, pen show events, and periodic exclusive content the primary benefits. Of course, Patreon members will continue to get first access to periodic sample sales, with right of first refusal on gently used pens. (Reminder that those pens which made it through Patreon are now available to the general readership!)

Did I mention we’re doing another Instagram giveaway which closes tonight?

Sunday Reading for September 25, 2022

September 25, 2022
  1. The True Value of Indie Pens (via Rachel’s Reflections). I did not have the chance to take Rachel and Jim’s Indie Pen class at either D.C. or Baltimore, but it looks like it’s on the list for next year. I also get frustrated with people complaining about the “value proposition” of handmade fountain pens that I consider - at their essence - pieces of art.

  2. Meet Your Maker - Shawn Newton of Newton Pens (via Pen Addict - Caroline). I had the pleasure/honor of having a table next to Shawn at this year’s D.C. Pen Show, and in terms of Indie penmakers, I consider his work to be among the best out there.

  3. Pen Collection Thoughts: Niche or Narrow? (via Pete Denison). Pete’s posts on this hobby are always great, and I’m fully in agreement with his observations that just when you think you’ve fully explored every aspect of this hobby, there are always new niches and rabbit holes to run down.

  4. The Commonwealth Pen Show 2022 Recap (via Gourmet Pens). Azizah recaps the 2022 Commonwealth Pen Show, which is now a 2-day show in the Boston area. I’m glad to see this show growing and may consider visiting in the future.

  5. Lamy Ideos Fountain Pen Review (via Blake’s Broadcast). The Lamy Ideos has a unique shape that makes it stand out, and those who purchased one have been happy with it, finding it comfortable to write with.

  6. Golden Leaves: Inkebara Deer Brown & Earth (via a fleeting ripple). This autumnal ink from Inkebara (a brand I have not tried) appears to have some nice dark brown shades to it.

  7. Early Thoughts on the Jinhao 80 Fountain Pen (via Fountain Pen Blog). Look’s like Jinhao is at it again, going after Lamy. Why bother to create your own section while knocking off the cap? Why not just create your own Makrolon pen?

  8. More Bits, Bobs & Bullet Journals: Lesson Plan Outlines (via mnmlscholar). I always love collecting posts about how people actually use their pens and stationery.

  9. Pennonia Méregzöld: Seafoam or Poison? (via Pen Addict - Kimberly). I love a dark teal fountain pen ink that leans blue moreso than green, so this one is right up my alley. Plus it has a fun family story behind it.

  10. Limited Pens Korea x Leonardo Officina Italiana Momento Magico Pink Salt (via Gourmet Pens). Leonardo always manages to find the best materials, and this latest special release is gorgeous.

In Case You Missed It…

This week on the blog I published Installment No. 2 of my series on Notebook Systems, taking a relatively in-depth look at Plotter, the Japanese ring-based system techo that’s received much attention lately. If you missed Part I, you can check that out here, in which I offer some background on the ideas behind the series and preliminary discussions on the various types of Notebook Systems out there. I also revisited a favorite workhorse fountain pen, the Waterman Carène, and published a short post on how people (myself included) use the desktop hourglasses we sell in the shop.

One reason I brought Anderillium into the store is my appreciation for inks that not only have a consistent theme but interesting muted color palettes. “Colossal Squid Dark” is a great blue-green-teal-black.

New In the Shop: Anderillium Inks, Traveler’s Refills and an Expiring Promotion!

Friday and Saturday saw LOTS of new arrivals in the Curated Shop, including one I’m most excited about: The arrival of Anderillium Inks. Based in Tampa, Florida, Anderillium’s line of sixteen different inks is inspired by nature. The “Cephalopod” series draws its inspiration from squids and octopuses, while the “Avian” series is bird-themed. I’ve previously reviewed “Cuttlefish Brown,” which mimics vintage cuttlefish sepia ink in that it goes on brown but when it dries takes on a grey tone. I’ve also reviewed Anderillium’s Chicago Pen Show “Michigan Avenue” special release ink, which I love. Be sure to check out the Anderillium dark greens and blue-greens, including Colossal Squid Dark, Green Kingfisher Green, and Flying Squid Blue, among others. Also, note that our current Nahvalur promotion will expire at the end of the week - all Nahvalur pen purchases ship with a generous 4ml ink sample, and it will be a sample of Anderillium this week!

I have to confess that I’ve also been a bad shop owner - I found a rather large stash of Traveler’s Notebook refills and inserts that had not been listed in the shop. (No wonder they weren’t selling!) Many of the undated diary refills and specialty papers are now restocked in both Passport and Standard size.

In the coming weeks you’ll be reading a lot about updates and upgrades to the daily carry!

Sunday Reading for September 11, 2022

September 11, 2022
  1. April Went to DC and SF Pen Shows 2022: Part I (via Penguin’s Creative). April write’s up the first part of her August Pen Show travels, one of the handful of us to hit both shows!

  2. Kilk Orient Fountain Pen (via Pencilcase Blog). Kilk is a Turkish penmaker who I’m starting to see all over the place. They have an interesting design, and I’d love to get my hands on one at some point.

  3. Happy Birthday to Me! (via Pen Addict - Kimberly). Happy birthday Kimberly! I fully support the “Birthday Pen” concept.

  4. Crystal Clear: Pilot Custom Heritage 92 (via a fleeting ripple). An often overlooked workhorse pen, the Pilot Custom Heritage 92 piston filler is an excellent option for those looking for a pen that simply disappears as you get work done.

  5. Early Thoughts on the Tibaldi No 60 Fountain Pen (via Fountain Pen Blog). Tibaldi has definitely gotten some traction with their recent releases of vintage-inspired designs and materials.

  6. The Bits and Bobs of My Teaching Bullet Journal: Meeting Logs (via mnmlscholar). I enjoy reading about others’ work notebooks and how stationery gets used every day.

  7. Aurora’s Matera and Deserto Are Gorgeous and (Nearly) Flawless (via UK Fountain Pens). Is Anthony back? Even if it’s only temporary, it’s great to see him back (and these are some very pretty Auroras).

  8. Pilot Acroball Ballpoint Pen (via Comfortable Shoes Studio). Pilot’s Acroball was conceived as their answer to the Uniball Jetstream. It’s a good pen, but has never taken off to the same degree.

  9. Pelikan Edelstein Apatite (via Pen Addict - Sarah). While I’m not a huge fan of Edelstein ink, I do know that many of you look forward to Pelikan’s annual release. This one doesn’t seem very exciting, to be honest.

  10. Pen Show Magic: The SF Pen Show 2022 (via Well-Appointed Desk). Julia has a guest post recapping her experiences at this year’s San Francisco Pen Show!

We’re giving away this Sinclair Model-R pen case. Be sure to check out the details. Giveaway closes at 11:59pm tonight.

In Case You Missed It… DON’T MISS THE GIVEAWAY!

This week on the blog, I offered my first impressions of the Nock Co. Sinclair Model R, which Nock brought back in collaboration with San Francisco-based Rickshaw Bagworks and revealed at the 2022 San Francisco Pen Show. Most importantly, don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the giveaway to win one of these cases - either by commenting on the Giveaway post or liking the Instagram post.

I also reviewed two new red inks I’ve been using recently: Laban Ares Red from the Greek Mythology Series, and Dominant Industries “Romania Red,” which is a good replacement for the legendary Montblanc Alfred Hitchcock.

This Week in the Curated Shop

Shop news included the arrival of some new cover and case options from Midori, including a new “vertical A5” notebook sleeve/portfolio in natural undyed goat leather. We’re also happy to announce a full restock of the Penco “Perfection” bullet pen series, in both the chrome, brass, and matte black and “Perfection Light” formats. Hightide hourglasses in 30 and 15-minute intervals also made a return to the shop and are selling fast. Stay tuned as we re-up favorites and bring in some new arrivals!

[UPDATE: As of Monday, September 12, 2022, we have added Nahvalur (formerly Narwhal) to our selection of brands! Please check out the “Original Plus” vacuum fillers, with more on the way!]

A few more San Francisco prizes inadvertently omitted from my recaps!

Sunday Reading for September 3, 2022: Labor Day Weekend Edition

September 4, 2022
  1. 2022 SF Pen Show: Definitely Not a Quick Recap (via Pen Addict - Kimberly). Kimberly and I are apparently locked in (friendly) competition over who can generate the longest recap of the SF Pen Show. This is a great one and extremely detailed.

  2. Show Recap: 2022 San Francisco Pen Show (via Well-Appointed Desk). Jesi was stationed at the Dromgoole’s ink rack all weekend, and she sold a TON of ink (including six bottles of Wearingeul to me).

  3. Thinking via the Notes I Take, a mnml Digest (via mnmlscholar). Given all of the discussions of notebooks and planners and journaling last weekend, including a couple of in-depth seminars, notetaking and the purpose of the notes I take is something at the forefront of my own mind as well.

  4. Ferris Wheel Press Cream of Earl Grey (via Fountain Pen Pharmacist). So this is one of the most intriguing colors in the Ferris Wheel Press lineup, IMHO, but is very, very, VERY light.

  5. Private Reserve Black Cherry (The New Formula) (via Inkdependence). With my love for all things red-black, you would think that I would’ve tried this one already. No such luck. I may need to pick up a bottle.

  6. Col-o-ring Update: Cover Colors & FOLIO! (via Well-Appointed Desk). The Col-o-ring Folio - the largest Col-o-ring EVER, is now available for purchase! While I have no idea what I would do with it, I want one!

  7. On the Differences Between Grips (via KraftyKats). Chloe discusses an important factor in selecting your pen of choice, which may also present a reason to visit a pen show - if your grip tends to be sensitive, a show (or your local pen store) offers you the opportunity to try before you buy.

  8. Witches: Lamy Azurite (via a fleeting ripple). The Lamy Crystal inks haven’t received much attention from the blogosphere lately, even though I’m generally a fan of Lamy inks and they’re always priced competitively.

  9. Long-Term Thoughts on the Visconti Rembrandt Fountain Pen (via Fountain Pen Blog). I love reading “long term” reviews of favorite fountain pens, and whether people’s opinions of certain pens stay the same having used them for years at a time. I need to be better about revisiting prior reviews.

  10. Pelikan M205 Apatite Special Edition Demonstrator (via Pelikan’s Perch). Just in time for the announcement of this year’s Pelikan Hubs, Pelikan has revealed the M205 “Apatite” demonstrator to match this year’s special edition Edelstein ink.

In Case You Missed It….

This week on the blog, it was all about recapping a great weekend at the San Francisco Pen Show. My recaps actually started last Saturday, in real time, when I discussed Friday at the show. On Wednesday, I offered my thoughts on what makes the San Francisco show so well-run in general (hint: it involves more classes and seminars, and a broader, more diverse array of vendors), and yesterday I did a very extended walkthrough of everything I took home from the show. Now I just have to figure out where to start with the review content….

Did I mention we restocked on the Penco Perfection Bullet Pens, both the plastic version and the metal in Gold, Silver, and Matte Black? For those who have asked, yes, they clip quite well to the Plotter Mini-5. ;)

New This Week in the Shop Plus a Labor Day Promotion

Paper, paper, and more paper! I was low on most of the paper brands we stock here in the T.G.S. Curated Shop, including customer favorite Midori MD Cotton. (For those who have asked, the MD Cotton Paper is the same paper that is used in those letterpress specialty Plotter refills pictured in yesterday’s review.) We also have more Clairefontaine Triomphe and Seyes-ruled paper. Every Thursday I index new arrivals and features in a dedicated post. And through Labor Day (Monday at 11:59pm), we’re running a special promotion where all orders will receive a free gift, whether that be some washi tape, an ink sample, or a pen/pencil! No coupon code needed. Just place your orders and enjoy!

Sunday Reading for August 28, 2022 (SF Pen Show Edition)

August 28, 2022
  1. Ferris Wheel Press Brush Fountain Pen Review (via Blake’s Broadcast). I’ve not had the chance to review the FWP “Brush” fountain pen, but I talked to quite a few people this weekend who enjoy the nibs on these pens.

  2. A Recipe for Disaster: Holiday Carry (via a fleeting ripple). If nothing else, fountain pens and travel always leads to some great memories (and stories)!

  3. What I Brought on My Trip (via Inkredible Colours). I always love to see a good travel layout, especially when I’m on the road.

  4. Asking the Right Questions About Use Case: a mnml Digest (via mnmlscholar). I promise I’m not including this link because it includes one of my posts, but rather because it has several other articles about how to consider the use case for those products in your collection, or more importantly, those you are considering adding to your collection.

  5. Monteverde Sweet Life Ink Set (via Dapprman). The Monteverde “Sweet Life” inks received great reviews when they were introduced a few years ago. Apparently there was a contamination issue that I was unaware of but which Dapprman notes here.

  6. Post-DC Post-Covid Recap (via Penquisition). Evan has his slightly (and unfortunately) delayed D.C. Pen Show recap, which as always is well-written and thoughtful.

  7. Composition Book Round Up Back to School Sale at Target, Walmart, and Dollar Tree (via Comfortable Shoes Studio). Leslie has the annual composition book round-up ready to go! It’s actually three posts at three different stores, and as usual you can find some low-cost gems out there.

  8. PenBBS 456 Fountain Pen Review (via Pen Addict). PenBBS’s vacuum filler model remains a reasonably priced favorite after all these years. I’m glad to see that PenBBS has been able to resume shipping.

  9. Colorverse Butterfly Nebula and NGC 6302 (via Well-Appointed Desk). I’ve seen this ink in person and it is indeed beautiful. While it was introduced at the D.C. Pen Show, it’s now generally available.

  10. Opus Cineris Harmonic Nib Series A Cursive Italic Hand Engraved Nib by Anabelle Sophie Hiller (via Gourmet Pens). I was disappointed that I didn’t get the opportunity to break away from the table and test out one of Anabelle’s nibs in D.C. Azizah has a video up!

In Case You Missed It….

In advance of the 2022 San Francisco Pen Show - a show that’s been quite planner and paper focused, at least this year, I posted a short piece on my five favorite planner pens. I also published a recap of the San Francisco Pen Show, Day One, which is only the first day of my adventures on the West Coast! Stay tuned for more SF recap content this week.

This Week in the Curated Shop

Right before I left (as in, five minutes before I departed for the airport), I received notice that my shipment of TWSBI Glow Green fountain pens had arrived, and they will begin shipping immediately upon my return from San Francisco. I’ve also restocked on numerous favorites, including the full range of Midori MD paper and Traveler’s Notebooks, in addition to many of the other TWSBI models in all nib sizes.

Consider T.G.S. Patreon!

I would love for the T.G.S. Patreon to become a core method of support for the T.G.S. website, and have tried to streamline it. I’ll also need to be a bit more vocal about its availability and what it offers. The Patreon Program offers two options for tiers of support: $3 and $5, and plan on making monthly meetups, pen show events, and periodic exclusive content the primary benefits. Of course, Patreon members will continue to get first access to periodic sample sales, with right of first refusal on gently used pens.
